General

The 15th Asian Squash Championships a biennial event will be held at the Indian Squash Academy, Chennai from 1-8 May 2010. This event is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. 13 countries namely China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kuwait, Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and hosts India will participate in this event.

The individual championship will be held from 1-4 May 2010 and the team championship will be held from 5-8 May 2010.

Individual Event

Mohd Azlan world # 16 and Nicol David world champion both from Malaysia have been seeded to win the title. There draw size is 64 for men and 32 for women.

At the last Asian Championship held in Kuwait in 2008 Mohd Azlan won his maiden Asian title defeating 4 time winner Ong Beng Hee, while Nicol David will be looking to win her 7th consecutive title from 1998 onwards.

The Indian contingent will be in full strength with a total of 16 men and 8 women participating in the individual event.

Indian national champions Saurav Ghosal & Joshana Chinappa will be leading the contingent. Saurav seeded (3/4) is scheduled to play Farahan Mehboob (Pak) in the quarterfinal & top seed Mohd. Azlan (Mal) in the semi finals. Joshana seeded (5/8) will be up against second seed Rebecca Chiu (HK) in the quarterfinal.

Team Event

The team event is scheduled to be held from 5-8 May 2010. Defending champions Malaysia in both the men’s and women’s category will be defending their title.

In the provisional seedings India has been seeded 3rd in both the men’s and women’s category.

The other Indians participating in the individual event are Men - Ravi Dixit, Gaurav Nandrajog, Naresh Kumar, Ramit Tandon, Abhishek Pradhan, Sandeep Jangra, Vikas Jangra, Vrishab Kotian, Naveen Jangra, Akshay Deepak & Mahesh Mangaonkar. Women – Anwesha Reddy, Aparajitha Balamurukan, Ankita Sharma, Saumya Kakri. Maj. Maniam & Cyrus Poncha are the coaches for the team.

The Indian team will be kitted by Black Knight and the official hotel for this event is Courtyard by Marriott.

There will be a meeting of the officers of the Asian Squash Federation on 7th May 2010 which will be followed by its Annual General Meeting on 8th May 2010.
