British Junior Open 2-6 Jan 2009

India’s performance at the British Junior Open, regarded as the most prestigious event after the World Championship, is testimony to the nation’s growing stature in international squash.

In the past, India’s Saurav Ghosal, Joshana Chinappa (both Under-19) and Dipika Pallikal (Under-17) had won titles at this championship, which is very much like the junior Wimbledon in tennis.

This year at the British Junior Open, Mahesh Mangaonkar won the title in the Under-15 section.

Mahesh Mangaonkar became only the third Indian male to win the in the British Junior Open title after he defeated Oliver Holland from England in 4 games. Anil Nayar and Saurav Ghosal had lifted the Drysdale Cup (Boys under 19 title) while Mahesh became the first Indian to win the Boys under 15 category. Mahesh played a terrific game, and even though he dropped the third set to his English opponent, he managed to get back and emerge as the champion. Aggressive shots to the front was his forte and Oliver was not able to have an answer to his shots making errors frequently.

In the boys’ Under-13 section, Kush Kumar, who had won the Scottish Open earlier, finished runner-up, while in the girls’ Under-19 category, India’s Dipika Pallikal went down in the final to Low Wee Wern of Malaysia in four games.
