SRFI Elections – 30 September

The big news of the year 2007 that has brought joy and pride to the Squash Fraternity in India has been the conferment by the Government of India of the prestigious “Arjuna Award” on National Champion Saurav Ghosal, a product of the India Cements Squash Academy and Brand Ambassador of the India Cements Limited. Saurav Ghosal (born Aug 1986) is one of the most outstanding Squash players of India. He won a Bronze medal in the 2006 Asian Games held at Doha. Saurav moved to the ICL Squash Academy at Chennai as a junior in 2002 to train under consultant coach Major S Maniam & National Coach Cyrus. The excellent foundation laid by them together with the world-class facilities available helped him to win the Junior National title consecutively for three years and emerge as the Men’s National Champion in 2004. His historic win at the British Junior Open title followed by the German & Dutch junior titles enabled him to become the #1 ranked junior player in the World in the same year. He is the reigning National Men’s Champion and has won the title thrice in 2004, 2006 & 2007. He with Ritwik Bhattacharya won the Silver medal in the World Doubles Squash.

Championships 2004, held at Chennai. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in Squash, the Govt. of India conferred the prestigious Arjuna Award on 30th August 2007.

British Junior Open, Sheffield (2nd - 7th January 2007)

Anaka Alankamony was India’s best performer attaining a creditable 3rd place at the British Juniors in the girls under 13 category. Anaka defeated Egypt’s Kanzy El Dafrawy in a five-game thriller. Saumya Karki’s performed well to achieve 4th position. Mahesh Mangaonkar, winner in Scotland was the only other Indian to reach the quarter finals going down to Pakistan’s Nematullah Khan in the boys under 13.

SRFI Honours Coaches

The SRFI awarded National level coaches for their outstanding contribution for the development of the sport in India in 2006. The award ceremonies was preceded by a 3 day coaching conference conducted by Maj. (R) S. Maniam, Consultant Coach, & Cyrus Poncha, National Coach.

N. Ramachandran presented the awards to the following coaches: Hari Om Tripathi, B.Balamurugan, Sunil Verma, Dalip Tripathi, Gajendra Singh Rathore and Dhiraj Singh. Manan Mashruwala was awarded for his outstanding contribution to tournament administration and Yogendra Singh was awarded for his contribution to refereeing.

World Junior Women’s - Hong Kong 1-11 Aug

India finished 9th, the team comprised Dipika Pallikal, Anwesha Reddy, Surbhi Mishra and Harita Omprakash. In the pool matches India beat China 3-0, Germany 3-0, South Africa 2-0 and lost to France 2-1. In the placing matches India beat, Switzerland 3-0, Korea 3-0, and lost to New Zealand 3-0

Anaka & Ravi Win Penang Junior Open – 6-10 June

Anaka Alankamony (Girls U13) and Ravi Dixit (Boys U17) returned victorious from the Penang International Junior Squash Championships. Anaka was the only Indian to win both the Penang Open as well as the Malaysian Junior Open (31st May - 4th June). Ravi Dixit defeated Ng Jo Wen, winner of the Malaysian Junior Open, in the final of the Penang Junior in a close four games 9-7, 9-2, 8-10, 10-8. Other Indian’s making the top 4 were Anwesha Reddy (Girls U17), Ramit Tandon (Boys U15) - runner up, Dheeya Somaiya (Girls U15), Pankhuri Malhotra (Girls U11), Akshay Deepak (Boys U15) 4th position. These achievements were a fitting end to a month long Malaysian tourarranged between the Squash Rackets Federation of India and Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia

5th ICL Chennai Open Squash Championship 12-16 June

Saurav Ghosal won his maiden Chennai open title defeating Wong Wai Hang of Hong Kong in the finals. The Chennai Open is Saurav’s Second PSA title.

Icl National Squash Championship 17-21 July

Saurav Ghosal won his third National title scoring a facile win over Siddardh Suchde 9-2, 9-3, 9-0. In the womens event Joshna Chinappa bagged her seventh title, defeating Dipika Pallikal 9-2, 4-9, 9-5, 9-1. In the professional category 30 year old Balamurugan, a coach at the ICL Squash Academy won his 10th title in a row defeating Dalip Tripathi 3-0

Parth Sharma & Naresh Kumar shocked the top seeds Saurav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Singh to emerge as the new National Double Champions.

ICL Chennai Open Circuit – II 13-18 Aug

Mohd Ali Anwar Reda of Egypt toppled top seed & former Indian National Champion Ritwik Bhattacharya 2-11, 11-6, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6 to win the ICL Chennai Open Circuit II event held at the India Cements Squash Academy in Chennai.

Chinese Delegation Visits ICL Squash Acadamy- 10 Sept

As host of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China has begun its preparatory work in right earnest. A reflection of this was seen in the keenness shown in viewing and studying the squash facility in the city by a 12- member delegation led by Mr. Liang Yong, from the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC). The India Cements Squash Academy played host to the visiting Chinese delegation.

Little Masters Juniors Squash Tournament - 18 - 22 September

Saumya Karki of Jindal Squash Academy bagged the girls under-19 and girls under-15 titles. Shivangi Paranjpe won the girls under-17 category. Laxman Joshi clinched the boys under-19 champion title beating Cyrus Vakil 9-4, 9-0, 9-0. In the Boys under-17 & under 15 events Karan Malik & Abhishek Pradhan emerged winners.

The 32nd Maharashtra State Open 23-28 September

The event drew a record 800 entries. Second seed Sandeep Jangra became the new Men’s Open Champion after beating top seed Vikas Jangra of the Services 9-5, 9-2, 10-9 Joshna Chinappa beat defending champion Mandy 9-3, 9-5, 9-5 in the Women’s final.

Ritwik Win's Psa Event In KL

India’s Ritwik Bhattacharya emerged triumphant in the NSC Super Satellite No3 squash event at the Jalan Duta NSC Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Top seed Bhattacharya reached the men’s final as expected - though dropped games in each round en-route to his tenth PSA Tour climax. But his unexpected opponent was Bilal Zaman, the fourth-seeded Pakistani who upset Australia’s No2 seed Mike Corren in the previous round to claim his second Tour final appearance.

The 28-year-old from New Delhi was too strong for Zaman, however, as Bhattacharya recovered from 1/2 down to win 11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 in 45 minute to collect his seventh PSA crown.

World Men’s Team, Chennai - 6 -12 Dec.

It was a glorious finish for the Indian squash team at the recently concluded 21st ICL World Men’s team Squash Championship in Chennai from 6-12 December 2007. 29 countries participated with England the defending champions being seeded 2 retained their title defeating Australia 2-1. France attained the 3rd place ahead of Egypt. India was seeded 10th as we finished 11th in the 2005 edition held at Islamabad, Pakistan. Our team comprising Saurav, Ritwik, Siddharth and Gaurav were given a target of finishing in the top 10. The team had an outstanding performance to finish 8th in the world – the best result for India in the last 3 decades.

The Squash Rackets Federation of India presented the players and coaches special incentives as recognition of their spectacular achievement.
